Wonderful Wildflowers

Erin Brady

Wildflower season is a special time of year in the Texas Hill Country. Although, it would
probably be more accurate to call it bluebonnet season. There are many beautiful wildflower
species that bloom in this area, but the Texas bluebonnet is the undisputed star. The
bluebonnet, scientific name Lupinus texensis, is unsurprisingly the state flower of Texas.

Although I’m a native Texan, I didn’t experience my first bluebonnet season until I was six. My
family was set to move to Central Texas in the summer, and we went on a house hunting trip
over spring break.

Wildflower season varies greatly from year to year, but we were lucky enough to visit while the
bluebonnets were at their peak. This resulted in a mass of photos of my sisters and I posing in
the blue flora. At the time we weren’t sure we needed quite so many photos, but the flowers
really were incredible and worthy of commemoration.

Over the years, we’ve continued to enjoy wildflower season and have taken many, many more
photos. Molly got a gorgeous shot of the bluebonnets last year that we all loved so much we
turned it into a card
!

When I think of the Hill Country, I’m pretty sure I’ll always picture it the way I first saw it, fresh
and bright with spring growth and the bluebonnets in full bloom. I’m happy one of our cards
can send a bit of that bluebonnet magic to a friend any time of the year.

Let's make waves!
